Osmo, a startup founded by ex-Google Research, has announced an innovative technology that enables the transmission of scents over the Internet. In the future, users will be able to share scents as easily as they share music or photos today.
The molecular composition of an object is analyzed using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. The data obtained is entered into the odor map (Principal Odor Map), a large database where AI identifies compounds that correspond to specific fragrances. The molecular formula of the fragrance is then sent to a special “printer” that synthesizes and combines substances to accurately reproduce the desired scent.
Recently, the developers managed to successfully “teleport” the aroma of fresh coconut, and then - plum. According to the authors of the project, remote transmission of odors can find wide application in the film industry, game development, television, advertising and perfume industry. In addition, this technology may assist in the fight against diseases of the olfactory system
