Mazda plans to release a new electric SUV equipped with a Wankel rotary engine by 2027. This was confirmed during the company's recent announcement. The Wankel engine, which was previously used in Mazda's MX-30 R-EV model, will work as a generator. It does not involve a direct connection to the wheels, which sets it apart from traditional rotary engines. Mazda's development team is also exploring carbon-neutral fuel and environmental compliance. The move comes in response to the MX-30's failure in the U.S. market, where it was only available in California and sold fewer than 600 copies before being discontinued in mid-2023. Mazda has also hinted at a future Iconic SP concept car that could feature a twin-rotor Wankel system
