Texas has built the world's largest residential district with 3D printing
Near Georgetown, Texas, Icon has 3D-printed Vulcan, a residential neighborhood of 100 homes. The final buildings are now being completed.
Compared to traditional methods, 3D printing can speed up the construction process, reduce costs and minimize waste of building materials. A mixture of concrete powder, water and sand is loaded into the printer, after which the concrete is applied layer by layer along a predetermined path, creating walls with a unique texture.
Construction began in November 2022. It takes about 3 weeks to print a single-storey house with 3-4 bedrooms. The foundation and roof are installed in the traditional way. As the developers assure, the printed walls are resistant to water, mold and extreme weather conditions.
The cost of such houses is $450,000 - $600,000. So far, just over a quarter of the 100 homes have been sold. In the future, Icon plans to use its technology to build landing sites, shelters and other structures on the Moon.
