Switzerland has invented a detachable electrical system for alpine skis
Swiss startup E-Outdoor has announced its new E-Skimo system. It is designed to make ski slopes easier to climb.
The E-Skimo system includes motorized treads mounted on skis. They significantly increase the speed of ascent. Each ski is equipped with a removable 20 Nm gearless stepper motor, a 220 Wh lithium battery and a snowmobile-like rubber tread. The motor units are equipped with 6-axis IMU motion sensors and GPS modules.
During ascent, the IMU continuously monitors ski position and user weight, automatically activating the motors to increase glide speed. If the skier falls, a sensor in the pole handle triggers the mechanism to stop the movement. After climbing to the top, the motorized components can be easily removed and stowed in a special backpack.
According to the developers, E-Skimo allows you to climb 80% faster with 30% less effort compared to traditional skis. One battery charge is enough for about 3 hours of operation, depending on the snow conditions.
E-Outdoor plans to work with existing ski manufacturers to incorporate this technology into their products instead of direct-to-consumer sales
