Scientists have created a prototype robotic chicken that takes off more efficiently than drones
Swiss scientists from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne, after a long period of bird watching, have built a drone on chicken legs and named it Raven. The robot has a propeller, a fixed wing and mechanized legs, which, according to the creators, allow it to fly faster and higher without excessive energy expenditure.
Head of development says modern drones need additional propellers and motors to adjust horizontal position, which wastes a lot of energy. Raven, thanks to its legs, can jump up and quickly gain speed in flight.
This was confirmed by the experiments of scientists. Raven turned out to be ten times more energy efficient when flying than classic drones with propellers, which took off from the ground. The robot's mechanical legs allowed it to take off and gain speed even on a short runway. And judging by the video, whatever the Raven is doing, it looks extremely cute.
In the near future, researchers plan to finalize the camera system, which calculates the distance to obstacles, and the mechanism of the wing, so that the robot can pass narrow places and quickly gain speed with the help of strokes
