A mixed wing aircraft has been developed by air carrier EasyJet in cooperation with startup JetZero. The concept, according to the developers, allows for a significant increase in lift and a reduction in the wing area required for flight. It also eliminates the need for a tail wing, which reduces drag and structural weight. The new hydrogen fueled aircraft will not only feature a blended wing, but will also be able to reduce emissions by at least 50%. The aircraft is interesting not only as civilian transportation. Its design can be adapted as a cargo and jetliner. It can also be converted into a tanker. In May 2023, JetZero announced its plans to build and certify the aircraft and received a $4,500,000 grant. Shortly thereafter, the company entered into a $235,000,000 contract with a U.S. agency that will provide funding for the next 4 years. The full-scale launch of the prototype is scheduled for early 2027. If everything goes smoothly, commercial operation of the new airplane will start in 2030.
