Private Jets Emitted 15 Million Tons of CO₂ in 2023: A Growing Concern
In 2023, the world’s 25,993 private jets released 15.62 million tons of CO₂ emissions, with most flights being short and originating from U.S. cities. Over the past four years, the number of private jets has increased by nearly a third, with emissions rising by 46%. Experts project an additional 8,500 jets in the next decade.
A study by Linnaeus University highlighted that private aviation now accounts for 1.7-1.8% of total commercial aviation emissions—a share that’s steadily rising. This growth raises questions about the equitable distribution of emissions under international climate agreements. The study also found that 47.4% of private flights were under 500 kilometers, and 4.7% were under 50 kilometers, adding to the debate on the environmental impact of luxury air travel
