Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon has become the stage for an ambitious new project from ZGF Architects. Its roof is topped by a massive 3.6 hectare timber structure. The project combines 9 buildings into a single layout. The roof weighs about 8,000,000 kg and is made up of wood, including glued laminated timber. It is also equipped with mechanical and electrical systems, and 49 skylights maximize natural light. The project takes into account the seismic activity of the region - the roof can withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of up to 9. The interior of the new terminal features 72 large trees, cascading gardens and more than 5,000 plants. The airport expansion is part of a major redevelopment. It is expected to double PDX's capacity. The first phase of the project is already open to the public. Construction of the second will continue through 2026.
