A new phase of testing has begun on Bell's innovative X-plane vertical takeoff and landing jet. It combines the characteristics of a helicopter and a jet airplane. The X-plane offers a number of new features, including the ability to fold individual parts to optimize flight while the jet engines are running. After takeoff, the vehicle tilts the propeller nacelles forward to enter horizontal flight mode and locks them in place when the jet engines are activated. The X-plane features a streamlined body with thin wings and a V-shaped tail. The folding main rotors are clearly visible on the nacelles behind the aerodynamic fairings. Bell says that once all work on the demonstration vehicle is completed, the X-plane will be capable of manned flight at high subsonic speeds of up to 833 km/h with a range of 370 km at altitudes of up to 9,100 meters. It will also be able to carry a payload of up to 2,300 kg in a compartment suitable for transporting a small car
