Musicians and audiovisual artists Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst presented a unique organ in London. The prototype is called GPU.
The organ controls the speed of each fan, allowing it to play melodies. Although details about the technical hardware have not been revealed, it is assumed that the GPU is powered by fans from PCs and the music is created using AI modeling techniques.
To train the artificial intelligence, the project authors collected collections of hymns and vocal exercises by recording choirs across the UK. The prototype also offers an interactive element: a new polyphonic call-and-response model allows the audience to sing and receive instant musical feedback from the device.
The GPU can be seen on display in London until February 2025.
