In Japan, a cafe opened where paralyzed people are controlled by robot
The technology company Ory Lab has opened a unique cafe called Dawn Ver Beta, where customers are served by OriHime-D robotic waiters. The main feature of the establishment is that these robots are controlled by paralyzed people.
The working staff of the cafe consists of 10 people with different degrees of disability - from spinal cord injury to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. All robot control operations are performed remotely using a computer and a special system that reacts to the slightest movements of the operator's eyes. The robots can pick up objects, move around the entire cafe space and even communicate with visitors.
The social significance of the project is that bedridden operators are given the opportunity to earn a living. The hourly wage is about $9
