China completes construction of record-breaking underwater tunnel
The construction of the largest underwater shield tunnel is nearing completion in eastern China. The work is being carried out by teams from China Railway 14th Bureau Group Co., Ltd. using the world's largest tunnel boring machine.
The tunnel includes a 3,290-meter-long underwater section with a diameter of 17 meters. This makes it the widest tunnel of its kind in the world. The construction utilizes 500 pipe rings for underwater protection.
The Jinan-Huanggang Tunnel will have 6 lanes in a double-deck configuration with a maximum speed of 60 km/h. It will become an important transportation artery connecting north and south across the Huang He River and improving connectivity between the central area of Jinan and the new economic zones.
The project also set a world record for the completion time of such a large-scale construction project: the underwater portion was completed in just 110 days from the start of work on September 1, 2024.
The construction of the tunnel across the Huanghe River on the Jinan-Huanggang Road is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025
