BMW successfully tested the Figure 02 humanoid robot at the Spartanburg factory
BMW has successfully tested the Figure 02 robot from Figure AI at its factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The robot has 16 degrees of freedom and a strength equivalent to a human.
The purpose of the tests was to study the integration of the humanoid robot into the manufacturing process, interaction with software and workers, and to determine the requirements for introducing robots into the production line. It performed well in the chassis manufacturing process.
The Figure robot was tasked with inserting sheet metal parts into fixtures, which required high dexterity and was ergonomically uncomfortable for humans. However, now that the tests have been completed, the robot is no longer working at the Spartanburg plant.
After the first test use in car production, experts from the BMW Group and Figure will continue to work together to prepare and improve Figure for future applications.
