Austria has invented a headset that treats depression without medication
Vienna-based startup Syntropic Medical has unveiled a unique device that uses directed light pulses to treat depression. The technology offers an alternative to drug treatment.
Syntropic directs light into the eyes through special goggles while a head unit measures its effects. The flickering light is used to stimulate the brain's microglial cells, which play a key role in maintaining healthy neural circuits. This stimulation helps to remodel brain structures associated with depressive disorders.
The non-invasive nature of the headset avoids the systemic side effects often associated with antidepressants, offering a safer option for long-term use, according to the project authors. Going forward, Syntropic Medical plans to conduct clinical trials and then advance the device for widespread adoption.
