Airbus is testing robotic rovers for missions to the Moon and Mars
Airbus is actively testing prototypes of next-generation robotic rovers. These devices are designed to explore the Moon and Mars.
Two robotic rovers are being evaluated during tests in a quarry in Bedfordshire, UK: the 4-wheeled Codi and the 6-wheeled Charlie. Both vehicles are being developed to efficiently perform tasks in challenging terrain in alien landscapes.
Codi is equipped with navigation cameras and a robotic arm. This allows it to autonomously collect samples and store them in sealed tubes with an accuracy of 10 centimeters. Charlie, in turn, has a specialized suspension system that will allow it to traverse obstacles up to 2 times the height of its wheels.
Charlie also serves as a test platform for a new navigation system developed for the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover. It is scheduled for launch in 2028. However, Airbus is yet to disclose details about it.
