According to a press release from New York-based startup Synchron, new technology will allow people with limited mobility to control iPhones, iPads and Vision Pro headsets with their thoughts.

The startup, backed by celebrities such as Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, uses unique equipment to detect brain signals without the need for surgery.

The key element of Synchron's technology is the Stentrode, a tubular metal mesh with electrodes that is inserted through a blood vessel. The device captures motor signals and sends them to a transmitter worn by the user. The signals are then sent to a wireless processor that interprets them into commands to control Apple devices.

Last July, an amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patient in the U.S. already used Synchron technology to control an Apple Vision Pro headset, as well as send text messages and watch videos. Apple now officially recognizes neural interfaces as a new way to input data alongside touch and voice commands.

This year, Synchron plans to conduct clinical trials of the device on participants with severe physical impairments
